Ray Dalio Cautions That Central Bank Digital Currencies May Allow Governments Worldwide Complete Control

Concerns Over Central Bank Digital Currencies

Billionaire hedge fund manager Ray Dalio expressed his worries during an episode of “The Tucker Carlson Show,” suggesting that the rise of central bank digital currencies (CBDCs) could pose significant privacy challenges for users.

Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell has stated that the central bank will not introduce a digital currency within his current term, which concludes in May 2025. Dalio commented on this, indicating that CBDCs could strip away privacy and grant the government enhanced oversight over transactions. He believes this could lead to, well, a contentious environment.

Dalio noted that while CBDCs might aid in combating illegal activities, they also empower governments with new means to tax citizens. “There’s no privacy,” he stated, emphasizing that every transaction would be tracked. This thorough oversight, while useful for curbing illicit activities, also provides governments an alarming amount of control.

Additionally, he highlighted issues like taxation and potential foreign exchange controls that could especially impact international users. For example, a citizen from France might find themselves vulnerable to governmental actions due to sanctions, raising serious privacy concerns.

Both Carlson and Dalio concurred that governments could use CBDCs as a means to politically “lock out” certain individuals, complicating the landscape further. Dalio reasoned that while the development of a CBDC might not be as significant an issue as some foresee, it’s still worth keeping an eye on.

On January 23, 2025, former President Donald Trump issued an order that barred federal agencies from issuing or managing CBDCs, citing risks to financial stability and individual privacy. Shortly after, he nominated former Federal Reserve Governor Kevin Warsh to take over Powell’s position.
