Eileen Gu Responds to Trump’s Criticism of Hunter Hess
Chinese Olympian Eileen Gu voiced her discontent with President Trump’s sharp remarks regarding American skier Hunter Hess. Hess had recently shared his “mixed feelings” about representing the U.S. at the upcoming 2026 Milan-Cortina Winter Olympics.
Gu, who is 22 and was born in the U.S. but competes for China, mentioned that it’s disappointing to see conversations about the Olympics dominated by political remarks rather than the spirit of sportsmanship and unity. “It’s unfortunate that headlines overshadowing the Olympics are unrelated to its true essence,” she remarked in an interview.
She added, “This really goes against everything the Olympics stand for.”
Having won her second silver medal in Milan, Gu showed empathy for Hess, noting that it’s common to face criticism from fellow Americans. At just 15, she made the controversial choice to leave the U.S. Ski and Snowboard Team to represent China in the 2022 Beijing Games, which stirred significant backlash.
Gu defended her decision to promote freestyle skiing in China, a country not traditionally known for winter sports, emphasizing her commitment to the sport. She became the youngest Olympic champion in freestyle skiing during the Beijing Games.
American snowboarder Chloe Kim, 25, also came to Hess’s defense. She expressed pride in representing the U.S. but supported her fellow American’s right to voice his opinions. “In moments like this, it’s crucial for us to unite and support each other,” said Kim, who is a two-time gold medalist and an eight-time X Games champion. “I’m genuinely proud to represent the U.S., which has given my family numerous opportunities. However, I believe we should also be able to express our opinions about what’s happening.”
Kim mentioned, “Considering that my parents are immigrants, this issue resonates deeply with me.”
Following Hess’s statements about his dissatisfaction with many aspects of America, several prominent athletes rallied behind him. They pointed out that Trump’s immigration policies specifically sparked concern among athletes.
Nonetheless, President Trump directed his most scathing comments toward Hess, labeling the 27-year-old skier a “real loser” in a post on his social platform. “If that’s the case, he shouldn’t have tried out for the team. It’s a shame he’s part of it. It’s tough to cheer for someone like this. Let’s make America great again!” Trump concluded.
