Former Mayor Eileen Wang spotted in Arcadia following guilty plea in Chinese spy case

Former Arcadia Mayor Eileen Wang, once caught in a storm of controversy, has made her first appearance in public since resigning due to allegations of espionage connected to the Chinese government.

Wang stepped down after acknowledging her role in a federal plea agreement, which has raised alarms about the extent of Chinese influence operations in the United States, according to prosecutors.

Recently, she has been spotted moving discreetly around Arcadia, seemingly trying to maintain a low profile while under federal watch.

Some reporters from the California Post attempted to confront Wang at her mansion, hoping to get her side of the story regarding her abrupt fall from a rising political figure to a suspected foreign agent.

While they could hear some activity from inside her home, no one came to the door despite multiple knocks.

Shortly after, a vehicle linked to Wang was seen leaving her driveway, heading toward Garfield Medical Center.

Once there, she exited the car and entered the building without speaking to any reporters. Not long after, the same car was sighted parked outside the Sheraton San Gabriel.

Neighbors noted that Wang has always maintained a rather private life. For instance, David Chan, a local resident, mentioned, “She tends to keep to herself. We hardly see her unless she’s out walking her husky. We wave occasionally, but that’s about it. Sometimes, we hear some commotion from inside, but nothing too clear.”

Another neighbor shared memories of Wang’s initial political efforts, recalling her canvassing for votes. “She was friendly, handing out pamphlets,” he recalled. “I can’t say if I voted for her, though.”

It seems that Wang’s past interactions have been minimal. One anonymous neighbor stated, “I only see her when she walks by, and it’s just quick hellos.” He added he doesn’t keep up with local politics much, sticking mostly to Netflix and YouTube.

Federal prosecutors are claiming that Wang collaborated with her then-fiancée, Yaoning Sun, to operate a website called “US News Center.” This site reportedly presented itself as a Chinese-American news outlet to secretly promote Chinese government interests from 2020 to 2022.

Additionally, it’s alleged that John Chen, alongside Sun, helped fund Wang’s campaign for the Arcadia City Council in 2022 while also reporting to individuals linked to the Chinese government.

Interestingly, despite the turbulent issues she faces now, Wang was previously celebrated by significant figures within the Democratic Party. In 2024, Congresswoman Judy Chu recognized her as “Woman of the Year,” citing her leadership, dedication, and role in the community.
