California electricity costs rose by 39% in six years.

If you’re experiencing higher electricity bills, you’re certainly not alone.

In fact, energy costs in California have surged by a staggering 39% over the last six years, making it the highest among all states. This increase can be attributed partly to the devastating wildfires affecting Los Angeles and surrounding areas and to policy decisions that have shifted costs to consumers.

Rep. Tori Ta, representing a working-class district in Orange County and a member of the Assembly Utilities and Energy Committee, expressed concern, saying, “Constant utility price hikes create ongoing pressure for my constituents to make ends meet.”

According to a study, residents of California already face the highest cost of living in the nation. Families pay about $30,000 more for essentials such as food, gas, water, and childcare compared to the national average.

The sharp rise in energy prices stems from multiple factors, including costs associated with managing wildfires, capital investments, and a costly transition to renewable energy—financial burdens primarily shouldered by ratepayers.

Researchers indicate that distribution costs are climbing because utilities have the ability to pass wildfire response costs directly onto consumers.

Professor Severin Borenstein from the University of California, Berkeley, noted that subsidies for rooftop solar programs also shift expenses onto other customers.

Interestingly, electricity rates in many parts of the country have either stayed steady with inflation or even dipped slightly between 2019 and 2025. In contrast, states such as Arizona, Minnesota, Missouri, Tennessee, Mississippi, and North Carolina saw some of the lowest increases, at just 1%.

Moreover, there are states like Nevada, which experienced a 12% decrease in electricity prices, and Iowa, where rates fell by 8%. Alaska, Kansas, and South Carolina also witnessed decreases, each by about 6%.
