Steve Scalise criticizes NYC Mayor Zohran Mamdani regarding 18 deaths due to cold weather

Political Tensions Emerge After NYC Cold Snap

In a recent statement, House Minority Leader Steve Scalise (R-Louisiana) criticized New York City Mayor Zoran Mamdani following the deaths of 18 residents due to a severe cold spell. Scalise’s remarks were made as part of a larger warning about the consequences of Democrats sidelining a bipartisan funding agreement for the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), which could lead to significant underfunding for agencies like the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA).

Scalise remarked, “If Democrats had their way, what would not be funded? They would literally defund disaster relief and FEMA. In New York City alone, you want to see what socialism brings? People are freezing to death under the leadership of socialist Mamdani. That’s where the Democratic leadership leads you.”

Mamdani confirmed the tragic 18th death resulting from the harsh temperatures affecting the East Coast, stating at a news conference that thoughts remain with the families of those lost. He encouraged homeless individuals to seek shelter against the extreme cold while his administration implemented warming vehicles across the city.

Despite these efforts, Republicans have accused Mamdani of failing to adequately expand access to emergency services during this bitter winter. It remains somewhat unclear what role FEMA is playing currently in assisting New Yorkers during this cold snap. However, the prospect of FEMA funding ceasing if DHS funding is disrupted has been a focal point for Republicans to pressure Democrats into reaching an agreement.

Scalise further emphasized the potential impact of a DHS shutdown on other essential services. He warned that if the DHS funding were to lapse, agencies like the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) could require employees to work without pay. “If Democrats have their way, closures at airports like LaGuardia will disrupt millions of Americans,” he stated.

There are ongoing discussions about various funding issues, particularly centered on Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), which has received significant funding recently. Fox News Digital has reached out to the Mayor’s Office for their take on Scalise’s statements.
