Trump’s Republican-Only Governors Meeting Sparks Controversy
The group representing the nation’s governors has decided against a formal meeting with President Donald Trump, limiting attendance to Republican governors. This change follows reported dissatisfaction from the White House regarding Democratic involvement.
Bandon Tatum, the CEO of the National Governors Association (NGA), expressed disappointment in a statement, pointing out that the bipartisan nature of the Governors Conference is a significant tradition. He stated that not inviting all governors undermines the opportunity for meaningful federal-state collaboration. “In this crucial time for our nation, unity and constructive dialogue are vital,” he said.
Oklahoma Governor Kevin Stitt, who is the NGA president, announced that the association would no longer facilitate the upcoming event scheduled for February 20. His letter to fellow governors highlighted that the NGA represents all 50 state governors, including territories like American Samoa and Puerto Rico.
In response to this decision, several Democratic governors have announced they will boycott White House engagements. Included in this collective stance are Kentucky’s Governor Andy Beshear, Michigan’s Governor Gretchen Whitmer, and more. Their statement noted a history of bipartisanship among Democratic governors and expressed disappointment that the current administration seems to reject that cooperation.
“Trump is fostering division at every turn, causing unnecessary chaos that impacts everyday Americans,” the governors remarked. They further pointed out that the historic dinner meetings, which have typically been productive collaboration events, will not occur this year if all governors aren’t invited.
The White House has yet to respond to requests for comment regarding these developments.
Originally, the NGA was slated to convene in Washington from February 19 to 21. Tensions between Trump and governors have been noted before, with past discussions being fraught with disagreements over issues such as transgender rights in sports. These discordant interactions add another layer to an increasingly divided political landscape as the governors navigate their roles amid national controversies.
