Tragic Shooting in Tumbler Ridge

A tragic event unfolded in a small town in northeastern British Columbia, where a shooting claimed the lives of 10 individuals—including a female gunman, according to local authorities.

Six victims were discovered inside Tumbler Ridge Middle School, while two others were found deceased at a nearby residence linked to the incident. Additionally, one person passed away while being transported to the hospital, as reported by the Royal Canadian Mounted Police.

The suspect was described in a local alert as a woman with brown hair and dressed in a distinctive outfit. Authorities later confirmed she died from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound.

More than 25 others were reported to be receiving care for various injuries at local medical facilities. Police Chief Ken Floyd shared during a press briefing that officers encountered numerous injuries and fatalities while assessing the situation at the school.

“We are currently securing the scene. Investigators are present to ascertain the extent of injuries and the potential weapons involved,” Floyd stated.

Although police identified the shooter, they opted not to release her name, citing the need to protect the integrity of the ongoing investigation. Floyd also mentioned that they had no comments on the motive behind this horrific act.

“We’re pursuing all leads to connect them to the shooter,” he noted, acknowledging the challenge of understanding the ‘why’ but expressing commitment to uncovering the truth.

Tumbler Ridge Middle School serves students in grades 7 through 12, and local authorities decided to close all middle and elementary schools in remote regions for the remainder of the week.

This quaint municipality, home to fewer than 2,500 residents nestled in the Rocky Mountains, now faces the grim reality of one of the deadliest shootings in Canadian history. The previous record dates back to 1989 when a gunman killed 14 students at L’Ecole Polytechnique in Montreal.

In response to mass shootings, Canada has enacted stringent gun control measures, recently broadening its restrictions on firearms classified as assault weapons.

British Columbia’s Public Safety Minister Nina Krieger issued a statement regarding the situation, emphasizing the need for community support during this tragic time.
