MILAN — Caution for Team Sweden Regarding William Nylander

William Nylander didn’t practice with Team Sweden on Tuesday, a situation the head coach, Sam Hallam, described as a “maintenance” day.

“After two full practices, he mentioned yesterday that it hurts a little,” Hallam noted after the practice. If he’s not fit to play, it might be a slow recovery leading up to the game against Italy on Wednesday night.

Earlier this year, Nylander had missed seven straight games due to a groin injury, and he only played three games for Toronto before the Olympic break. This maintenance day seems to be a precaution to prevent him from overdoing it before the real competition starts post-round-robin.

In Nylander’s absence, Filip Forsberg has stepped in, joining Adrian Kempe and Joel Eriksson Ek on the ice.

Hallam seemed relaxed about the situation, expressing, “I’m really not worried at all. He’s been sharp and looking good on the ice over the past couple of days. I thought a maintenance day would be best. We’re still early in the tournament, and we have more significant games coming up, so let’s keep our focus there.”

Rasmus Andersson’s Whirlwind Trade

On a lighter note, Rasmus Andersson of Sweden joked that his recent trade from Calgary to Vegas was “boring” for the media. The defenseman has had quite a few changes in a short span. Just weeks ago, the Golden Knights finalized a deal with the Flames involving multiple picks and a prospect.

Andersson mentioned, “My family is still in Calgary, so I won’t see them for a while. Thankfully, my wife is coming to visit soon. It’s tough that I won’t be around my kids for about six weeks, though.”

Goalkeeper Decision Still Under Wraps

As for the goalkeeper for Sweden’s opening match against Italy, Hallam did not specify who would take the position. “I’ve been asked about the goalie situation frequently this year. I have my three picks for this squad, and I’m sure one of them will be in goal,” he stated, while keeping the final decision undisclosed until shortly before the game.

Meanwhile, both the American and Canadian squads took Tuesday off. Canadian players were seen enjoying short track speed skating, where they secured a silver medal in the mixed team relay.
