Is Belarus Collaborating with Russia to Execute Hybrid Attacks on NATO Countries?

It seems that a series of weather balloons from one country are causing quite a stir in the neighboring nation’s airspace. In this case, we’re talking about Belarus and Poland. These balloons, often carrying something like a pack of cigarettes, drift through Polish airspace. Some situations have escalated to the point where civilian airports have had to impose temporary restrictions. Belarus attributes these flights to smugglers, but Poland isn’t buying that explanation, viewing the balloons as a part of a broader hybrid warfare strategy. There are claims that GPS devices are frequently attached to these balloons for easy retrieval.

Polish army on standby regarding national security

The Polish Armed Forces Operations Command reported that Belarus has been attempting reconnaissance, confirming that Polish air defense systems are on alert. They made this statement regarding incidents from January 31st to February 1st.

While Polish military officials state there’s currently no imminent threat to national security or civilian safety, forces remain on standby.

Colonel Marek Utrazki, a former deputy head of military counterintelligence, noted that such incursions are designed to test Poland’s defense readiness. They aim to document these incursions, and additionally, collect information on strategic military points within NATO territory, which poses a challenge to Russia.

Belarus used weather balloons in Lithuania

Poland isn’t the only nation dealing with this issue. Lithuania, which shares borders with both Poland and Belarus, has also experienced weather balloons entering its airspace. At one point, the number of balloons was so high that Lithuania declared a national emergency, leading to significant investments in defense technologies.

A representative from Lithuania’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated that a comprehensive strategy has been put in place to address and mitigate these threats.

According to officials, the balloon launches disguised as cigarette smuggling are merely part of Belarus’s ongoing hybrid campaigns against the EU. Since 2021, Belarus has been leveraging migration to create instability along the EU’s eastern borders, exerting pressure on both society and government.

Balloons and Latvia

Latvia, which borders Belarus, Lithuania, and Russia, has similarly seen weather balloons from Belarus. As in other neighboring countries, it’s common to find cigarettes linked with these balloons.

Reports suggest that smugglers may collaborate with the Belarusian government to deploy weather balloons, not just to distract from illegal immigration but also to play into larger strategic analysis concerning NATO’s reaction.

Russia uses weather balloons in Ukraine

In Ukraine, the scenario is slightly different, but similarly troubling. Apparently, the Russian military employs balloons to exhaust Ukraine’s ammunition resources. According to a Ukrainian Air Force spokesman, these balloons are a low-cost tactic for Russia.

There have been instances where both sides have utilized balloons alongside drones to overwhelm enemy radars, prompting defensive retreats.

China used weather balloons against the US

Interestingly, these tactics aren’t exclusive to Russia and Belarus. In 2023, China sent a weather balloon across the U.S., which traversed Alaska and Canada before being shot down off South Carolina’s coast. This balloon reportedly contained advanced technology, posing significant espionage concerns for the U.S.
