Lindsey Vonn Suffers Injury at Winter Olympics
American ski icon Lindsey Vonn endured a compound fracture of her tibia during a serious incident on Sunday, following the conclusion of the Winter Olympics. Dr. Thomas Spalinger, who was present on-site with the Italian National Gendarmerie, described how he comforted her after the accident.
“I was there with a Carabinieri officer at the start of the race and reached her on skis,” Spalinger shared with a Spanish newspaper. “After examining her injuries, we made the decision to have her airlifted to the hospital.”
“She was in significant pain at that moment, so I rushed in to start treatment and stabilize her. A physiotherapist also helped keep her calm until the helicopter arrived. Thanks to the excellent teamwork of the medical staff and the rescue team, the situation was managed efficiently.”
Spalinger, a young anesthesiologist working his first Olympics, played a crucial role in the response.
Vonn had previously torn her ACL a few weeks back and broke her foot just 13.4 seconds into the women’s downhill final at Cortina d’Ampezzo.
She was quickly airlifted from the scene.
The following day, at 41 years old, Vonn revealed the extent of her injuries, stating that she would need multiple surgeries to mend her fractured tibia.
“I tightened the line too much, and my right arm got caught on the gate, which caused the twist and the crash,” she explained in an Instagram post, emphasizing that her ACL issues were unrelated to this incident.
She acknowledged the inherent risks of the race but expressed no regrets.
After undergoing her third surgery on Wednesday, Vonn reported that the operation went well.
“Success today feels different than it did a few days ago,” she mentioned in an Instagram update, sharing a photo from her hospital bed. “I’m making progress and I believe it’s going to be okay, though slowly.”
Vonn extended her gratitude to the outstanding medical team, her friends, family, and supporters worldwide, and congratulated her teammates for their inspiration during this challenging time.
