Kentucky Paper Releases Opinion Piece Describing Senate Candidate Daniel Cameron as a ‘Black Servant’

Op-Ed Critiques Black Republican Candidate Daniel Cameron

A local newspaper in Kentucky, the Courier Journal, recently featured an op-ed that criticized Daniel Cameron, a black Republican seeking a Senate seat, labeling him a race traitor. The article, authored by Ricky L. Jones, carries a striking headline: “Daniel Cameron is Kentucky’s saddest Republican Senate candidate,” and further describes him as a “sophisticated corporate spokesperson for anti-Black backlash politics.”

In his piece, Jones argues that Cameron’s campaign essentially promises to uphold the status quo for white individuals in Kentucky and beyond. He characterized Cameron as “disgraceful” and the “saddest” among Republican candidates, referring to him collectively as a “wretched bunch.” Jones also noted a perceived discomfort among white people regarding a “growing black threat.”

Jones is currently a professor and chair of the Department of Pan-African Studies at the University of Louisville. The university did not provide a comment in time for publication.

The article accuses Cameron, Kentucky’s first black statewide elected official, of a form of racial betrayal, suggesting that he possesses “cynical anti-Black racial venom and self-loathing” reminiscent of a character played by Samuel L. Jackson in django unchained. The character, Stephen, is depicted as a loyal house slave, which further emphasizes the weight of Jones’s comparison.

Jones goes on to liken Cameron to a “black servant who betrayed his brother,” mentioning his opposition to diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives and his support for former President Donald Trump. The tone of the article is sharp, labeling Cameron a “lost white-washed soul” left behind by historical figures seeking freedom. It claims he actively demonstrates disdain for his own race to please others.

In response, Cameron released a statement critiquing the op-ed, arguing that the left harbors animosity towards black Republicans. He stated, “There’s a special kind of hatred that the radical left has for Republicans who look like me, and it’s on full display here.” He expressed frustration over being labeled and shamed for his conservative values and support for Trump.

Cameron emphasized his autonomy, asserting, “My mind is my own, and I don’t need anyone’s permission to speak it freely.” He firmly stated he would not apologize for diverging from what he termed the beliefs of “radical Marxists.” The Courier Journal boasts the largest circulation in Kentucky, but no comments were returned by the Daily Caller before publication.
