A remarkable story has emerged from Kentucky, showcasing the unexpected heroism of a dog. Recently released body camera footage shows how a canine companion assisted the Kentucky State Police during a search for a missing child.
On January 7, Officer Josh Thompson of the Louisville Metropolitan Police, along with his team, was on the lookout for a 3-year-old boy when a collie mix trotted up to them, barking insistently. The footage captures this encounter as the dog seemed eager to get their attention.
Thompson later expressed surprise at not having noticed the dog earlier during her patrol. Yet, the collie persisted, barking directly at the officers, almost as if trying to guide them.
“Let’s go find him,” Thompson said, encouraging the dog, which promptly dashed into a nearby backyard. Thompson, at that moment, began to think maybe the child could be somewhere close.
When they entered the backyard, the dog led them toward a garage, where a car was parked. Officers began searching the vehicle and quickly uncovered the missing boy, frightened but safe inside the passenger seat.
In a moment of instinct, Thompson slipped into “dad mode,” showing the boy how to unlock the door so that they could get him out. “He hit the door latch. I pulled, and the door opened,” she recounted. To her relief, the boy jumped out and excitedly grabbed her.
Though he was scared, the child was unharmed and soon reunited with his family. Post-rescue, the police officers expressed their gratitude to the dog, petting him and celebrating his role in the successful outcome.
“Lassie found him,” exclaimed one officer, showcasing the light-hearted spirit of the moment. Thompson reflected on the serendipitous nature of the encounter, noting, “I don’t know where that dog came from, but it was a blessing from God that day.”
Local resident Sean Calloway mentioned that this dog is a familiar figure in the Okolona neighborhood, often seen roaming around, especially in pleasant weather. “He’s always out here like this, but he’s a good dog,” Calloway said, affectionately referring to him as the “Louisville Lassie.” With a pat on the head, Calloway declared, “You’re a hero.”
