Tragic Discovery in Queens After Devastating Fire
On Wednesday, emergency responders recovered the body of a 17-day-old baby girl from the debris of a heavily damaged home in Queens. This followed a massive fire that erupted on Monday, which also claimed the life of a 34-year-old woman and left a 22-year-old man with critical burns.
The infant’s body, which has yet to be officially identified, was seen being transported in a small white bag outside a home on Dongan Street in East Elmhurst. It took search teams two days to locate her.
The NYPD was alerted to this heartbreaking incident on Wednesday, although the exact moment the infant was found remains unclear.
Investigators from the Medical Examiner’s Office removed the body, and an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the death is ongoing.
The fire, classified as a four-alarm incident, resulted in the tragic death of Miguelina Alcantara. The exact relationship between the baby and Alcantara has not been disclosed.
Authorities reported that the fire began on the second floor at around 6:45 p.m. Monday, affecting nine individuals in the residence.
The injured man was reported to have burns covering 99% of his body, and neighbors expressed horror at the severity of his injuries. One neighbor described the scene, noting, “He looked bad. The skin on his face and body was melting.”
He was urgently transported to Harlem Hospital in serious condition.
The cause of the devastating fire remains under investigation as of Wednesday, with officials still working to pinpoint what led to such a significant blaze.
Other individuals, including a 10-year-old girl, sustained minor burns and smoke inhalation, but they are anticipated to recover.
Disturbing images depict the four-story structure completely gutted, leaving behind a scene of charred remains.
A neighbor shared insights about the area surrounding the house, describing it as “full of junk,” which may have contributed to the intensity of the blaze. However, as of Wednesday, fire officials had not yet reached a conclusion about the fire’s cause or any factors that may have fueled it.
