New Inflation Report Shows Positive Trends
CNN business reporter Matt Egan shared some hopeful insights about the latest inflation data released by the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) on Friday.
Surprisingly, inflation dipped to 2.4% for the year ending in January, down from 2.7% in December. Egan pointed out during his segment on CNN News Central that the core inflation rate fell to 2.5%, marking the lowest annual rate since March 2021.
Egan expressed that this decline is promising news for consumers. “At the start of the year, inflation has taken a significant turn for the better. Comparing consumer prices to last year, we see a 2.4% increase, which is an improvement over December’s rate. It was slightly higher than many anticipated,” he remarked. The month-on-month increase was 0.2%, also a positive sign that exceeded expectations.
Economists are keenly observing core inflation, which excludes food and energy costs. Egan noted that the current core inflation rate sits at 2.5%, the lowest since the inflation crisis began in early 2021. He added, “While we can’t ignore food and energy expenses, core inflation is often a more reliable metric for predicting inflation trends. Over the past few years, we’ve seen some encouraging shifts.”
In June of last year, inflation hit a staggering 9.1%, the highest rate in four decades under the previous administration.
While analyzing a graph, Egan commented on the overall trends, stating that inflation has shown signs of improvement since January 2025, despite some fluctuations. “Inflation increased following the implementation of significant tariffs on imports, but luckily, the trend is now moving downward.”
A CNN report indicated that while the price of uncooked ground meat has surged, other essentials like eggs have dropped by 34%, and gasoline prices have decreased by 8%.
This latest report comes in the wake of a BLS announcement revealing that the U.S. economy added 130,000 jobs in January, surpassing expectations.
Lastly, President Donald Trump’s economic approval rating stands at -13.6 points, according to average figures from RealClearPolling.
