AI tool Claude assisted in the capture of Venezuelan leader Nicolás Maduro during a US military raid, according to a report.

A recent report indicates that the US military utilized Anthropic’s AI tool, Claude, in the recent operation that resulted in the capture of Venezuelan leader Nicolás Maduro.

Last month, special operations forces apprehended Maduro and his wife, extraditing them to the US on drug-related charges.

Claude was implemented through a collaboration between Anthropic and Palantir Technologies, a data firm whose tools are frequently utilized by the Department of Defense and federal law enforcement. This information comes from a source familiar with the situation.

“We can’t confirm or deny the use of Claude or any AI model in specific operations,” an Anthropic representative informed. “Anyone utilizing Claude, whether in the private sector or government, must adhere to usage policies governing its deployment. We collaborate closely with our partners to ensure compliance.”

The guidelines set by Anthropic restrict the use of Claude for purposes related to violence, weaponry, or surveillance.

A source close to the situation has stated that Anthropic is aware of both confidential and unclassified uses of Claude and is confident that all applications comply with its usage policies along with its partners’ compliance standards.

The Department of the Army chose not to comment when approached for clarification.

According to the report, Anthropic was the first AI model developer involved in classified operations for the Department of the Army.

The article further mentioned that Anthropic had concerns regarding Claude’s utilization by the Pentagon, with officials during the Trump administration contemplating the cancellation of a contract valued at up to $200 million that had been signed the previous summer.

The report acknowledged that AI technology can serve a range of functions, from document summarization to the management of autonomous drones.

The Trump administration emphasized the importance of advancing AI technology, with Army Secretary Pete Hegseth stating in December that “the future of American warfare is here, and it is AI.”

He remarked, “As technology progresses, so do our adversaries. But we at the War Department are not remaining inactive.”
