Missing Toddler Rescued with Help from a Dog
Recently, police in Louisville, Kentucky, received unexpected assistance in their search for a missing toddler.
As drones and police helicopters scanned the skies for the 3-year-old boy, officers from the Louisville Metro Police Department’s 7th Division searched the area, fully aware of the urgency of the situation.
“Lassie found it!”
Officer Josh Thompson mentioned that one of his colleagues heard a woman calling about a child. Although it wasn’t the exact call they were following up on, it did involve a younger child. The woman activated a Ring doorbell camera and then hurried away.
Thompson followed her and discovered that the boy had gone to a house just across the street.
With luggage piled at the front door of the mansion and no sign of anyone inside, Thompson decided to check the back of the house, noting it had “several areas where children could be.”
Upon returning to the front, hoping for someone to answer the door, he realized a dog was following him.
“There was a dog, and he started walking with me,” Thompson recalled, admitting he felt cautious around dogs he wasn’t familiar with. The dog began barking at him, clearly trying to get his attention.
Footage from his body camera shows Thompson encouraging the dog, saying, “Let’s go find him! Let’s go!” The dog immediately turned and led the officers to the back of the house.
“It took me all the way back to the backyard, and at that point, I thought, ‘Okay, this kid is in this backyard,'” Thompson reflected.
Officers noticed the back door was slightly open and conducted a brief search inside, but came up empty. When they stepped outside without finding the boy, the dog once again welcomed them and dashed over to the parked car.
Then, Thompson heard a fellow officer shout in excitement, “We got him!”
“The child was sitting in the passenger seat, looking scared,” Thompson recounted.
Guided by the police officers, the boy was able to unlock the door, prompting joyous cheers from everyone around.
“I don’t think I’ve ever seen a happier kid in my life,” Thompson said. “He jumped out of the car and wrapped his arms around my neck, not wanting to let go.”
In the video, it was clear the dog shared in the happiness, wagging its tail enthusiastically and going from officer to officer.
“Lassie found it!” exclaimed one officer.
Thompson noted that in his two years patrolling that neighborhood, he had never seen the heroic dog before or since.
“I don’t know where that dog came from,” he said. “But God blessed that day.”
The LMPD commented on the event, saying that the dog was a “four-legged friend” who reminded everyone of the amazing efforts of the police officers, with heroism evident in many forms.
