Columbia Student Blames Congresswoman for Expulsion

A Columbia University student, Kaimani James, who previously led an anti-Israel movement on campus and made a controversial statement claiming that “Zionists have no right to live,” is now attributing her expulsion to North Carolina Congresswoman Virginia Foxx.

James, who faced a year-long suspension from the university and was denied readmission in April 2024, argues that Foxx, a Republican, infringed upon her First Amendment rights by calling for her expulsion.

In a federal lawsuit filed in Manhattan, James claims that Foxx, 82, exploited her position as the chair of the House Education and Labor Committee by failing to take appropriate action against him at Columbia University.

Foxx contended that the university had been negligent in dealing with James’s alleged anti-Semitic remarks, asserting on social media in September that he had not been expelled and that the administration had repeatedly failed to act.

“Columbia, you missed the mark time and again,” she criticized.

James, now 22, expressed disdain for the situation, pointing out that Foxx directly impacted his education.

He accused her committee of targeting institutions in a way reminiscent of the McCarthy era, alleging in his legal documents that it violated the rights of students and faculty by conducting an Inquisition that resulted in severe consequences like suspensions and firings.

In his defense, James maintains that he does not harbor anti-Semitic views.

Despite this, he stood firm on his past statements, asserting, “I will not let anyone shame me for my politics. Everything I said, I meant it,” he stated in a tweet.

James claims that Foxx and her committee have wrongfully conflated anti-Zionism with anti-Semitism, leading to his legal actions seeking unspecified damages and an injunction against Foxx to protect his rights.

In response, Foxx dismissed the lawsuit’s credibility and reiterated her commitment to combating anti-Semitism, asserting her determination to safeguard Jewish students from discrimination across various college campuses.
