Teacher of the year nominee taken into custody for proposing payment in exchange for sexual acts with a 13-year-old boy

A finalist for Teachers of the Year in California was arrested for allegedly attempting to pay for sex with someone he believed was a 13-year-old boy. This undercover operation took place last week, involving Ruben Guzman, an assistant principal and math teacher at Sunrise Middle School in San Jose.

Guzman, who is 31 years old, was recognized for his contributions to education by the San Francisco 49ers. He was apprehended on-site by authorities from the San Jose Police Department and the FBI.

This incident is part of a broader enforcement effort that saw ten additional arrests in the region related to online child exploitation.

His arrest has sent shockwaves through the school district. Superintendent Teresa Robinson expressed her disbelief, stating that there was no evidence indicating any wrongdoing at the school itself. She noted, “While this is extremely upsetting, it does not reflect us as a school. He was highly respected as both a teacher and administrator.”

Robinson further emphasized that, to their knowledge, no students had been harmed, reiterating the district’s unwavering commitment to safety.

During his six years at Sunrise Middle School, Guzman earned accolades, including being named a Teacher of the Year finalist and receiving recognition from the 49ers.

According to SJPD spokeswoman Stacey See, the undercover operations are crucial for capturing potential offenders before they can victimize children.
