Dodgers closer Edwin Díaz reacts to Mets owner Steve Cohen

PHOENIX — Mets owner Steve Cohen expressed his confusion this week regarding star closer Edwin Diaz’s decision to join the Dodgers during the off-season.

When the media asked Diaz about Cohen’s comments at his first spring training session on Saturday, he made his choice sound quite straightforward.

“I was a free agent, which allowed me to explore my options, and I think the Dodgers did an excellent job in recruiting me,” stated the 31-year-old right-hander, who signed a three-year deal worth $69 million with Los Angeles—the highest salary ever for a reliever.

“In the end, I chose to be here. I respect the Mets organization, the players, the staff, and the ownership. They’ve treated me well, and I have no complaints about them. But, ultimately, I’m here now,” he added.

Reflecting on his experience so far, Diaz seems quite pleased with his new situation.

After the Dodgers’ second practice on Saturday, the three-time All-Star praised not only the talented roster but also the welcoming culture in the clubhouse.

When asked what impressed him during his time at Camelback Ranch, Diaz highlighted “the chemistry in the clubhouse,” noting, “Everyone has really welcomed me.”

“I think that’s a big part of why they’re successful. They have a fantastic clubhouse,” he remarked later, adding, “All the players bring different personalities to the table. It’s fun being with such a diverse group.”

This week, Cohen, known for his willingness to invest in the Mets, mentioned his surprise at Diaz’s departure, suggesting that he believed they made a strong offer to the pitcher.

Reports indicated the Mets had offered Diaz $3 million less than the Dodgers, although it was rumored they might have been able to raise their bid further.

“I can’t say exactly how Edwin decided to leave,” Cohen said. “At the end of the day, that’s his choice. I thought we put a decent offer on the table.”

Diaz shared that one of the main attractions of moving to Los Angeles was the opportunity to compete for a World Series title—a goal he hasn’t achieved yet.

He reiterated his excitement over this new chapter, saying, “This is a fresh journey for me. I’m thrilled to be with the Dodgers, so we’ll see how it unfolds.”

Meanwhile, Dodgers reliever Brusdar Graterol, who is set to miss the entire 2025 season recovering from shoulder surgery, recently mentioned at a Fan Fest event that he anticipates being ready for Opening Day. However, manager Dave Roberts suggested on Saturday that Graterol will need extra time to recover and may not be ready at the start of the season.

“It’s going to take time for his shoulder to heal,” Roberts acknowledged. “We need to proceed cautiously. He threw off the mound yesterday, but his velocity isn’t where it needs to be yet. It’ll be a slow progression for Brusdar.”
