Simonetti’s Marathon Challenge: Running for a Cause

Anthony Simonetti never imagined himself as a runner. But once he started, it seems he just couldn’t stop. Much like the famous character Forrest Gump, his journey took him to new heights.

Originally from Staten Island, Simonetti now resides in Hazlet, New Jersey. Recently, he completed an extraordinary feat: running seven full marathons across seven continents in just seven days. This challenge was part of the World Marathon Challenge.

“It felt like ‘The Amazing Race’ on steroids,” he shared. “I would race, then hop on a plane to the next stop, and do it all over again. I didn’t even stay in hotels—just kept moving. I could maybe sleep on the plane, but honestly, I only think I managed four hours a week.”

He didn’t undertake this challenge for personal glory or accolades—his aim was to raise money for St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital in Memphis, Tennessee.

Simonetti’s commitment stems from personal experience. He watched his older sister, Samantha, as she bravely fought childhood cancer. While she survived and is now 34, the journey profoundly affected him.

After graduating from Staten Island Institute of Technology in 2011 and then earning his MBA from Harvard University in 2021, he began participating in various marathons worldwide to benefit hospitals, including notable events in Sydney, London, Berlin, and Chicago. Initially, he ran with a group called the “St. Jude Heroes,” helping to raise $20,000 for the Boston Marathon in 2020.

When the World Marathon Challenge invitation arrived, St. Jude supported him once again, affirming his dedication to their cause. The journey kicked off in January, starting with fellow runners in Cape Town, South Africa, before heading to Antarctica for the first race.

Ultimately, he and 51 other participants raced in various locations, making stops in places like Australia, Asia, Europe, and South America, with the grand finale in Miami on February 5th.

His initial fundraising goal was $100,000, and right now, he’s around $72,000. There’s still time to donate if you’re interested.

“It wasn’t an easy task,” Simonetti confessed, “but honestly, I really enjoyed the experience. Each race was a tribute not just to St. Jude, but to all the people who have had an impact on my life.”

Over the years, he has managed to raise about $250,000 for St. Jude. Looking ahead, Simonetti is also planning a climb up Mount Kilimanjaro in Tanzania next month.
