Nancy Guthrie missing case: Police dismiss burglary explanation

Law enforcement officials are pushing back against recent claims suggesting that the disappearance of Nancy Guthrie, 84, was the result of a failed robbery. According to sources familiar with the investigation, this theory is not widely accepted among investigators.

One official stated that the suggestion of a botched burglary doesn’t hold much weight, emphasizing that nighttime home burglaries are extremely uncommon. “Commercial burglaries happen at night, typically in residential areas during the day,” the official noted.

The official expressed doubts about Guthrie’s home being a viable target for theft, commenting, “There aren’t really any valuable items there, and in a botched robbery, typically the victim isn’t taken.” They added, “While anything is possible, I feel like it’s likely something else entirely.”

Pima County Sheriff Chris Nanos also conveyed skepticism towards a local news report which claimed an inside source suggested investigators now believe this incident was indeed a “botched robbery.” The report added that DNA evidence found from a Range Rover parked outside a restaurant was being analyzed, and stated that many investigators believe Nancy Guthrie may still be alive.

Separately, the FBI confirmed that black gloves discovered last week seem to match those worn by an unidentified individual caught on surveillance footage from Guthrie’s residence.

These gloves were located about two miles from Guthrie’s home, as shared in a statement to the family over the weekend. They were sent to a private lab in Florida, where they arrived the following day.

According to federal officials, preliminary DNA results have been received, and investigators are now awaiting final confirmations before uploading the DNA profile to the FBI’s national DNA database.

“The DNA profile obtained appears to be distinct and seems to match the glove seen on the surveillance video,” the FBI reported. Savannah Guthrie also released a video update as the search for her mother continued into its 15th day.
