'Sinners' Star Wunmi Mosaku Can't 'Celebrate' Her Oscar Nomination Due to 'the Deaths of Renee Good and Alex Pretti'

Wunmi Mosaku, recognized for her role in the 2025 film sinner and Disney+ series loki, expressed her difficulty in celebrating her Oscar nomination amidst recent tragedies. “How can I celebrate when there are murders happening?” asked the Nigerian-born British actress.

Mosaku shared, “We couldn’t find joy in this news when it’s overshadowed by such tragedies as the murders of Renee Goode and Alex Preti by ICE agents in Minnesota, or the kidnapping of a young boy,” in a quote to the Sunday Times.

It’s worth noting that Preti was actually killed by a U.S. Customs and Border Protection officer, which is an important distinction.

“It’s challenging to balance the excitement of nominations with such grim news. For some, it’s a beautiful moment; for others, it feels dark and dystopian. How do I even go out and celebrate?” added the actress from deadpool & wolverine.

She received a nomination for Best Supporting Actress at the 2026 Academy Awards for her portrayal of Annie in the vampire horror film sinner, directed by Ryan Coogler, marking Mosaku’s first Oscar nomination.

Speaking further, Mosaku noted that her husband seemed unfazed by the current events. “There’s this odd American mindset where terrible things happen, yet people carry on with their lives the next day. I’m left feeling let down for a week, wondering how others can be so casual when something so tragic occurs.” She expressed a desire for a cocoon-like comfort.

“My response is a reminder to him that this isn’t normal,” she added, admitting that raising children in the U.S. was not part of her plans.

“I think about moving, but have no clear idea where to go,” she reflected. “Honestly, it’s hard to picture going back to Manchester, especially with how the weather here in L.A. feels.”

Mosaku is among a number of public figures voicing concern over the actions of U.S. law enforcement as Democratic lawmakers highlight these issues.

Just recently, actress Jamie Lee Curtis commented in variety that “The situation with ICE is completely out of control,” labeling the Trump administration’s policies as “inhumane” and the actions of their agents as “abhorrent.”

In the past weeks, various Hollywood figures have made statements on social media criticizing the government, while singer Roseanne Cash urged supporters of the Trump administration to unfollow her. Giancarlo Esposito, star of breaking bad, called for a “revolution” against ICE.

Last month, actress Molly Ringwald labeled the Trump administration as “fascist,” warning that backing Trump’s immigration policies could eventually lead to charges of treason against Americans once the left regains authority.
