Officials from the Trump administration have responded to criticisms regarding the use of masks by federal immigration enforcement agents, explaining that there has been a significant rise in assaults and threats against employees linked to the administration’s strict immigration policies.
Tom Homan, an official with the White House Border Patrol, emphasized the need for Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents to wear masks for their protection, given the alarming statistics shared by the Department of Homeland Security (DHS). “I don’t like masks either,” he mentioned during an interview on CBS News’ “Face the Nation,” but insisted that the safety of officers is paramount.
The DHS reported staggering figures: assaults against ICE agents have risen by 1,300%, death threats by 8,000%, and vehicle attacks by 3,200%. Notably, a spokesperson also highlighted violent incidents, including a sniper attack on an ICE facility in Dallas and an employee in Minneapolis who suffered serious injury during a recent operation.
DHS documented incidents of aggression toward ICE agents, including an attack where an individual fired shots into an ICE facility while promoting anti-ICE sentiments. In another instance, a federal officer’s finger was severely injured during a protest operation in Minneapolis.
In recent months, congressional Democrats have been vocal about ICE’s actions, especially concerning their presence in major cities amid the crackdown on immigration. Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer and House Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries have advocated for unmasking ICE agents, characterizing this as essential for public safety and transparency.
While speaking to reporters, Jeffries stressed that revealing the identities of federal employees crosses a dangerous line—a sentiment shared by many on Capitol Hill. The Trump administration has acknowledged the growing threats against ICE officers and has committed to vigorously prosecuting anyone who targets them.
Homan referred to a DHS report revealing a 1,500% increase in assaults against ICE officers, along with violent threats that have skyrocketed to 8,000% as per the last year’s data. This has raised alarms within the department as assaults against ICE personnel continue to surge.
Despite ongoing violent threats, some congressional figures have argued against ICE’s methods, labeling them as excessive. In a notable instance, a California teen was incarcerated for making numerous false emergency calls to ICE. The Justice Department has indicated that such cases will guide their future actions against individuals who misuse law enforcement resources.
Democrats are also ramping up their criticisms, with Schumer recently describing ICE as a “rogue” agency that exceeds its mandate. He emphasized the urgent need to curb their aggressive tactics and highlight concerns over escalating violence related to immigration enforcement.
