Luxury train car service between SF and LA is about to launch

A travel startup has introduced a rather extravagant service, charging $18,500 for a chartered private railcar that connects to an Amtrak train, accommodating up to six passengers. This setup promises “ultimate luxury” with features like personal chefs, stewards, and more.

Based in Philadelphia, Luna Train operates this upscale offering on two different Amtrak routes. The 36-hour journey on the California Zephyr—from Emeryville to Denver—will set you back $18,500 for six travelers, while the 12-hour Coast Starlight trip from Oakland to Los Angeles costs $10,000 for six.

The first Coast Starlight trip left Oakland at 9 AM on January 15 and sold out at $10,000. Meanwhile, the inaugural California Zephyr run was on January 16 at 8:15 AM, also fully booked at the higher price.

The luxurious 1950s railcar features a glass dome ceiling, leather seating, a dining room with elegant tableware, and a media room equipped with a flat-screen TV and bar.

Moreover, it has five bedrooms, including a master suite complete with a double bed and a private shower, and even an outdoor platform for passengers to enjoy some fresh air during stops.

“This service transcends first class, offering an experience akin to chartering a private jet,” noted Mike Abena, the founder and CEO of Luna Train. He shared this insight with a publication in December, explaining that their trips provide a unique chance to travel in luxury while taking in stunning views.

Luna Train operates as a reservations platform, curating private rail cars owned by independent operators and managing logistics similar to an online travel agency.

Though luxury train travel has existed via around 60 independent operators, the booking process has often been scattered and challenging.

The company also offers a New York to New Orleans service, featuring overnight trips at a price over $28,000 for six passengers, according to their reservation site.

“We can charter a rail car anywhere Amtrak travels,” Abena mentioned.
