Oil Prices Decline Amid Iran-U.S. Nuclear Deal Discussions

Oil prices dropped on Tuesday following Iran’s announcement of having reached an “agreement in principle” with the United States regarding a potential nuclear deal, which could ease some sanctions on Iran.

Brent Crude Oil Futures saw a 0.6% decrease, trading just below $67.50. Similarly, West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude oil fell by 0.9%, hovering around $62.25.

In remarks made on national television, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi stated, “We were able to reach general agreement on a set of basic principles, and we will now work towards drafting an agreement based on this.”

These talks have been ongoing for the past month between Iranian leaders and U.S. Special Envoy Steve Witkoff. The progress is perceived as a reduction of the military conflict risk between the nations, which would have otherwise led to a significant increase in oil price premiums.

Iran effectively controls the Strait of Hormuz, a vital shipping route where approximately 20 million barrels of oil transit daily. Any attempts to limit access to this strait or attacks on regional infrastructure could lead to substantial price hikes, as markets would factor in longer shipping times and diminished Middle Eastern supplies.

Earlier in the day, Iran declared plans to partially close the strait for several hours due to military exercises, as reported by Bloomberg. This move coincides with the United States ramping up its naval presence in the area, including the deployment of a second aircraft carrier last week. Following previous advisories from U.S. maritime authorities, captains are urged to avoid Iranian waters when possible due to risks of sabotage or forced boarding.

Despite these advancements in discussions, Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Khamenei expressed skepticism about U.S. intentions through posts on his X account. He critiqued American proposals with statements like, “Americans are saying, ‘Let’s negotiate your nuclear energy, and the outcome of the negotiation should be that you don’t have this energy!’”

Khamenei further emphasized that if such conditions were true, there would be no basis for negotiation, though he also indicated that setting the terms of negotiations in advance would be imprudent.
