Patriots Hire Zach Kuhl as Defensive Coordinator
It makes sense that the Patriots, fresh off winning the AFC title and heading to the Super Bowl, would look to strengthen their defense.
On Tuesday, New England officially appointed Zach Kuhl, who has been the linebackers coach, as their new defensive coordinator. He filled the role of play caller after Terrell Williams had to step back for most of the season due to a prostate cancer diagnosis.
Reports indicate that Williams is shifting to a more senior position, although the specifics of that change remain a bit unclear.
Fortunately, Williams is now cancer-free after undergoing a year of treatment.
Kuhl’s promotion seemed inevitable, given how he performed during the last season.
The defense showed noticeable improvement, allowing 4.9 yards per play, ranking seventh in the NFL—quite a contrast from the previous year when they allowed 5.5 yards per play, placing them 20th.
“One of the goals I had in this role is to connect with different people. I want them to see that their success is my main focus. Whether it’s through my work ethic or the discussions I have with them, that’s what matters most,” Kuhl mentioned in a talk with Ryan Dunleavy.
Williams joined the Patriots in January 2025 after previously working as the defensive line coach for the Titans. Unfortunately, he faced a “health scare” early on that led to him being absent from the team.
Despite returning for training camp and serving as the starting defensive coordinator at the season’s start, Williams was sidelined again once diagnosed with cancer.
Kuhl has a history of working with the Titans under Vrabel, starting as the defensive quality control coach in 2020, and then he moved into the inside linebackers role from 2021 to 2023.
After Vrabel’s firing at Tennessee, Kuhl spent some time with the Giants before rejoining him in New England last season.
“He has an impressive ability to adapt quickly, without being finicky. We make separate calls, and I always ensure we’re synchronized in our strategies,” Vrabel noted. “Kuhl is a solid teacher and communicator.”
