California Surfing Legend Murdered in Costa Rica
The brother of Kurt Van Dyke, a well-known surfer from California, is convinced that his sibling was randomly attacked in Costa Rica. Peter Van Dyke expressed his belief that the circumstances surrounding the murder are more shocking than initially reported.
“I can’t think of a reason this happened except maybe a random act of violence. But honestly, we’re still waiting for more information,” Peter shared.
Kurt, aged 66, was fatally stabbed in his home in Cahuita on Saturday during an apparent robbery, as Peter suspects. He hinted at a wider issue of crime in Costa Rica, suggesting a surge in violent acts.
Peter noted that criminals might be moving from countries like El Salvador, which has stringent security measures, to other regions where they feel they can operate more freely.
“It’s pretty clear that the Caribbean side has faced increased violence, which wasn’t the case in the past,” he added.
Peter believes the murder was part of a broader trend of rising crime linked to robbery incidents, particularly on the Caribbean coast of the country.
The U.S. State Department has also issued warnings for travelers to Costa Rica, highlighting a rise in petty crimes as well as more serious threats like armed robbery and even murder.
Kurt Van Dyke was found deceased with a sheet over his head, while his 31-year-old girlfriend was reportedly threatened at gunpoint. She was tied up with zip ties until the attackers escaped in their car.
Authorities in Costa Rica have not yet made any arrests or determined a clear motive for the violence. Peter expressed doubt that the attack was motivated by any personal vendetta, stating he never heard his brother mention having enemies.
“I just can’t see him having any foes. He was a good person; he never mentioned conflicts,” he remarked.
Yet, Peter indicated that the nature of the killing points to something more unsettling than a mere burglary.
Kurt, a Santa Cruz native, ran the Hotel Puerto Viejo for four decades and was well-loved by locals, as per his brother.
“He was incredibly generous and supportive to many people in the town. The community is devastated by his loss,” Peter stated. “Kurt was always willing to help anyone in need. He was well-known and respected by all.”
The investigation into Kurt’s death continues, with results suggesting that suffocation could have been a primary factor.
A member of a prominent California surfing family, Kurt made a significant impact on the surf scene, earning the nickname “King” on the Caribbean coast. His mother, Betty, was part of an early group of female surfers, while his late husband was also a celebrated surfer in California.
