Former South Korean President Receives Verdict for Sending Troops to National Assembly

Former South Korean President Sentenced to Life in Prison for Treason

Former South Korean President Yoon Seok-yeol has been sentenced to life in prison after being found guilty of treason for directing military forces to seize the National Assembly in December 2024. The decision came from Judge Gee Kui-young at the Seoul Central District Court.

The court determined that the 65-year-old conservative leader unlawfully mobilized military and police forces to occupy the legislature and detain political adversaries. This move aimed to establish an emergency authority that hadn’t been seen in South Korea for over 40 years.

The turmoil erupted on December 3, 2024, during a late-night speech where Yoon accused opposition groups of being sympathetic to North Korea. It was quite a dramatic scene, with militants attempting to enter Congress via helicopter, and chaos ensued as citizens and Congressional staff struggled to block the entrance. Ultimately, the legislation was overturned roughly six hours later, as lawmakers unanimously rejected it.

Throughout the trial, Yoon maintained that he was innocent. He argued, perhaps somewhat controversially, that he had the constitutional authority to impose martial law, asserting that his actions were meant to alert the public about threats from opposition members. His legal team intends to appeal the court’s ruling.

Defense attorneys criticized the trial, claiming it was engineered to reach a predetermined outcome. Following the verdict, National Assembly Speaker Woo Won-sik called for Yoon to acknowledge his wrongdoing and apologize to the citizens of South Korea.

Additionally, several other government officials have also received lengthy prison sentences. The former Defense Minister, Kim Yong-hyun, was sentenced to 30 years for his involvement in the planning and execution of the ordinance, while former Prime Minister Han Deok-soo received a 23-year sentence for attempting to validate the measure during a cabinet meeting.

This is a significant moment in South Korean history, as Yoon becomes the first former president to be sentenced to life behind bars since the military dictator Chun Doo-hwan faced a similar fate in 1996. Notably, South Korea has not carried out the death penalty since 1997.
