Firefighter Andrew Jimenez appears in court wearing a suicide vest for the murder of his wife Mayra

In a Los Angeles courtroom, colleagues of a cherished teacher who was brutally murdered struggled to hold back tears on Thursday as her suspected killer—firefighter Andrew Jimenez—appeared wearing a suicide vest.

Jimenez, standing behind a plexiglass barrier in shackles, donned a blue vest with no shirt underneath, his physique evident as sheriff’s deputies moved in and out of the court.

When public defender Mark Carrillo requested that photos of Jimenez not be taken, the judge supported the request while Jimenez faced forward with a sorrowful expression.

Jimenez responded affirmatively to a question about postponing his arraignment to April, stating, “Yes, I would be honored.”

He faces charges of domestic violence murder after the tragic discovery of his wife, Mayra Jimenez, who was found bludgeoned to death in their home on January 21.

Joining the Glendale Fire Department as a paramedic in 2008, Jimenez later became a firefighter.

Mayra was a well-loved first and third grade teacher at Wilshire Elementary School in Koreatown and also served as an ordained nondenominational minister.

As Mayra’s five fellow teachers looked on, one could be seen breaking down in tears upon seeing Jimenez. Deputy District Attorneys Kelsey McKeever Unger and Chelsea Blatt offered comfort to them in the crowd.

Home videos that surfaced show Andrew and Mayra in a joyful marriage, enjoying moments together, including footage of them at their wedding, playfully sipping smoothies in fireman hats.

However, Jimenez’s former lawyer mentioned that he possibly knew about Mayra’s alleged affair just before the shocking incident.

Attorney Jose Romero revealed that Jimenez was looking through diaries that suggested “the infidelity of decent people.”

Jimenez is set to return to court on April 15, and if found guilty, he could face a sentence ranging from 26 years to life in prison.
