Bullet discovered in trash on United Airlines flight raises alarm at Newark airport

A bullet discovered in an overhead compartment of a United Airlines Boeing 737 at Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR) led to considerable security delays. This incident happened on February 17th during a flight bound for Miami, prompting authorities to treat the plane as a potential crime scene. After an extensive search, the flight managed to leave nearly three hours behind schedule.

United Airlines confirmed that they conducted a security screening for Flight 1511 after the bullet was found. Following the inspection, they indicated that the aircraft was cleared, allowing it to depart for Miami.

The flight was initially set to take off at 2:07 p.m. local time, according to flight tracking data, but it eventually lifted off at 4:49 p.m., arriving in Miami at 7:33 p.m.

The circumstances surrounding how the bullet made its way onto the plane remain unclear, even after the stringent inspection processes at Newark. The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) has strict regulations that prohibit firearms in carry-on luggage. They require that any ammunition must be unloaded, securely locked in a hard-sided container, and declared to the airline during check-in.

Interestingly, this isn’t the first time unusual attempts to conceal items have occurred at Newark Airport. In October 2024, a man from Mississippi was arrested after TSA agents found disassembled gun parts hidden in his belongings, including a box of Lego.

As for the bullet incident, it raises a lot of questions. How could something like that go unnoticed? And while security measures are in place, situations like this can certainly make travelers uneasy. It’s just a reminder of the unexpected challenges that airports and airlines face in ensuring passenger safety.
