Virginia Governor Abigail Spanberger Nominated for Democratic Response to State of the Union

Democratic leaders have officially chosen Virginia Governor Abigail Spanberger to present the “Democratic response” to President Donald Trump’s State of the Union address, scheduled for February 24th.

On Thursday, Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer and House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries made the announcement, praising Spanberger’s career as an exemplar of “nonpartisan” leadership.

They emphasized her dedication to “service over politics,” asserting that her mission is to achieve meaningful policy outcomes and economic stability for working families, rather than getting caught up in partisan conflicts.

“I am pleased that Governor Abigail Spanberger will deliver the Democratic response to the State of the Union address,” Jeffries tweeted. He called her a committed public servant and a champion for working families.

“Governor Abigail Spanberger is proud to announce the Democratic Party’s response to the State of the Union,” Jeffries stated. He noted Spanberger’s extensive background as a postal inspector and national security expert. Winning the gubernatorial race in November by the largest margin for a Democratic candidate in 60 years showcases her credentials. “Throughout her career, she’s worked to uphold the Constitution and deliver real results,” he added.

Schumer remarked, “Governor Spanberger has always prioritized service. She understands that Americans desire lower costs, safer communities, and a stronger democracy, not chaos and corruption. She will carve a path forward to reduce everyday costs and protect healthcare.”

Spanberger expressed her eagerness to articulate a model of governance that aligns with what Americans expect. She believes it’s crucial for leaders to prioritize genuine progress over political theatrics and to ensure that government meets the people’s needs.

“Virginians and Americans everywhere are facing rising costs and significant disruptions in their communities,” Spanberger expressed. “I look forward to next week to discuss what these Americans expect from their leaders: a commitment to service.”

The minority leaders additionally announced that Senator Alex Padilla will respond in Spanish, focusing on reducing costs, “protecting democracy,” and curbing “corrupt federal agencies.”

“We don’t need another speech from Donald Trump pretending everything is fine when prices are high and wages are low,” Padilla remarked.
