Frustrated anger: Republican claims lawyer engaged in 'blackmail' over affair rumors tied to staff member's suicide

Charges Against Texas Congressman Gonzalez

Texas Republican Congressman Tony Gonzalez is under scrutiny due to extortion allegations following an affair with a staff member who tragically took his own life by setting himself on fire.

The former staffer, Regina Santos-Avilés, reportedly texted a colleague in April 2025, stating she had engaged in an “adult affair” with her supervisor. Sadly, just a few months later, in September, Santos-Avilés ended his life.

Gonzalez, who has a wife and children, is claiming that the attorney representing the husband of Santos-Avilés, Adrian Aviles, is attempting to extort him.

In a post on Thursday, the congressman expressed his defiance, stating, “You are guilty and should resign.” He added that it’s “disgusting to see people profiting politically and economically from tragic deaths.” Gonzalez advocated for immediate public access to the police report from Uvalde and emphasized his commitment to his constituents.

Barrera, Aviles’ attorney, has confirmed that he made a settlement offer to Gonzalez’s legal team as part of “confidential settlement negotiations,” sent on February 10. He contended Gonzalez’s portrayal of the message was incomplete, omitting key details about their intention to resolve matters without public litigation.

Barrera stated that the sensitive nature of their exchange ran counter to claims that they aimed to threaten the politician, emphasizing that their focus was not on damaging his career but on a resolution.

Aviles, reacting to Gonzalez’s statements, defended his actions and described the congressman as a “two-faced politician.” He mentioned that releasing the full police report would not be in the best interest of their young son, who might encounter disturbing details as he grows up.

In an ongoing political landscape, Gonzalez’s main opponent, Brandon Herrera—a gun enthusiast and YouTuber—came close to unseating him in the last election, demonstrating a rising challenge for the congressman.

The case continues to unfold amidst claims and counterclaims, with Gonzalez’s office yet to respond to requests for additional comments.
