Bronx Man Sentenced for Murdering NYPD Officer
A Bronx man, suffering from severe mental issues, was sentenced to 24 years in prison for the brutal murder of an NYPD officer’s estranged wife. The family of the victim has been vocal about their deep sorrow and declared they cannot forgive him.
Argenis Baez, 37, killed police officer Ariana Reyes Gomez in her Bronx apartment during a domestic dispute in June 2022. Surprisingly, he claimed in court that her police partner had instructed her to commit the act.
The courtroom was packed yesterday with relatives and numerous police officers, all dressed in purple to raise awareness about domestic violence. Emotional testimonies from the slain officer’s family left many in attendance visibly shaken.
“Where there is no remorse, there is no forgiveness,” Baez’s sister, Julissa, told the court, expressing her anger towards him.
Another family member noted, “You didn’t just kill a woman… you killed her dreams, her future, and so many things that will never go away,” a sentiment that resonated with those present.
While Baez received a lengthy prison sentence, some believe it falls short of what he truly deserves.
An officer who knew Reyes-Gomez remarked, “24 years isn’t enough for this coward. She should never see the light of day again. Officer Gomez was an exceptional officer and a wonderful mother who touched so many lives.”
During his sentencing, Baez asked for forgiveness, seemingly minimizing his actions and blaming others. He acknowledged the pain faced by Reyes-Gomez’s family, stating they were “going through a difficult time.”
Bronx District Attorney Darcel D. Clark confirmed that Baez would indeed serve 24 years, followed by five years of supervised release, after pleading guilty to first-degree manslaughter earlier this year.
District Attorney Clark expressed hope that the sentence might provide some solace to the family, who have transformed their grief into advocacy against domestic violence.
Reyes-Gomez, often described as an “angel on earth,” joined the NYPD in 2019 and had a young son with Baez. Reports indicate that her last words during the confrontation were “my son,” as she pleaded with Baez not to harm her while their child was away.
Prosecutors noted that Baez had broken into Reyes-Gomez’s apartment early on June 13, 2022, leading to an argument that escalated into violence, resulting in her being stabbed eight times.
After the incident, an off-duty officer called a relative, who then dialed 911. Authorities found Reyes-Gomez’s body, following a trail of blood.
Following the murder, Baez confessed to his aunt, prompting her to contact the police. An arrest warrant was issued, and bloody clothes were located in the apartment. Baez eventually surrendered to a police station that same day and faced multiple charges.
