FCC Launches Campaign for America’s 250th Anniversary
The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) is kicking off an initiative aimed at encouraging broadcasters nationwide to recognize and celebrate the 250th anniversary of the United States.
In a recent announcement, FCC Chairman Brendan Carr revealed the Pledge America campaign, developed alongside President Trump’s Task Force 250. This effort is intended to mark the momentous occasion of the country’s milestone birthday this year.
“Broadcast stations, in line with their longstanding obligations to the public, hold a crucial role in educating and entertaining audiences everywhere. They are particularly capable of creating programming that addresses the needs and interests of their local communities,” the FCC stated.
The commission added, “By joining the Pledge America campaign, stations can lend their voices in support of Task Force 250, broadcasting content that celebrates American history and motivates the nation, showcasing achievements from the nation’s founding up to today’s Trump administration.”
Carr called on broadcasters to provide programming that fosters civic awareness, national pride, and shared history. “Broadcasters have a unique opportunity to tackle significant issues by offering tailored content to their communities while honoring the inspiring narrative of American independence,” he stated.
Carr mentioned “Schoolhouse Rock!” as a notable example and suggested various actions broadcasters might take to align with the Pledge America campaign:
- Air public service announcements or specials promoting civic education and recounting local and national history.
- Incorporate segments in regular newscasts that feature sites of historical importance, such as National Park Service locations.
- Start each broadcast day with “The Star-Spangled Banner” or the Pledge of Allegiance.
- Feature music from renowned American composers like John Philip Sousa and Duke Ellington.
- Present daily segments on “Today in American History,” spotlighting notable events from that date.
- Collaborate with community organizations that celebrate stories of American unity and triumph.
Although participation in the Pledge America campaign is voluntary for broadcasters, Carr expressed hope that they will fulfill their commitment to serving their communities by highlighting inspiring stories from America’s past.
