The United States Sets New Winter Olympic Gold Medal Record

The United States has made an impressive mark in Olympic history. On Saturday, they secured their 11th gold medal, breaking the record for the most gold medals ever won by any country in Winter Olympic history.

This record-setting win came from the mixed aerial team, which included Chris Lillis, Connor Curran, and Kyla Kuhn.

Prior to this achievement, the record stood at 10, set during the 2002 Games held in Salt Lake City.

Among the individual gold medalists were notable athletes like Breezy Johnson in women’s downhill alpine skiing, Elizabeth Rowley in women’s moguls freestyle skiing, Elana Myers Taylor in women’s monobob, and Mikaela Shiffrin in women’s slalom. Alex Ferreira also won gold in men’s freestyle halfpipe skiing, while Alisa Liu marked the milestone of winning the U.S.’s first gold in 2019.

The U.S. national team’s performance has been quite overwhelming; they notched victories in freestyle skiing, speed skating (with two golds from Jordan Stoltz), alpine skiing, and figure skating. They also had nail-biting victories, including in bobsled and women’s ice hockey, often in intense matchups against their long-time rivals, Canada.

So far, Team USA has gathered a total of 31 medals: 12 silver and 8 bronze, with a few more opportunities ahead before the Olympics conclude this Sunday. Notably, the men’s hockey team is set to face Canada for the gold medal, coinciding with the 46th anniversary of the Miracle on Ice, which adds a layer of historical significance to the match.

Before the hockey games, the U.S. will also aim for medals in mixed four-person bobsled, women’s 50km cross-country skiing, and women’s halfpipe freestyle skiing. Norway currently leads the competition with 40 total medals, including 18 golds.
