New York Governor Suspends Liquor Laws for Olympic Hockey Game

Governor Cathy Hochul of New York is temporarily easing the state’s liquor laws, allowing bars to open earlier for the Olympic men’s hockey gold medal match between the U.S. and Canada. But this doesn’t quite extend to New York City.

In a press release, Hochul noted, “I have directed the State Liquor Authority to suspend enforcement regarding alcohol service hours from 6 a.m. tomorrow to 10 a.m.” However, she further clarified that this directive only applies to parts of New York state that aren’t facing a state of emergency due to an impending snowstorm.

On Saturday, the governor declared a state of emergency for over 20 counties in southern New York, including New York City. “This only pertains to regions without a state of emergency as our main concern is public safety during the storm,” she added.

The men’s hockey teams from the U.S. and Canada are set to face off at 8:10 a.m. ET, and the game will be shown on NBC. Hochul mentioned she wanted to relax restrictions on bars and restaurants so that hockey fans could come together to enjoy the game.

The U.S. team recently triumphed over Slovakia in the semifinals, securing their place in the final. Matthew Tkachuk from Team USA expressed the significance of this matchup, stating, “This is what all Americans and Canadians grew up watching. It’s the best rivalry in sports.” This game marks a chance for the U.S. to capture its first hockey gold medal since the 1980 “Miracle on Ice” victory against the Soviet Union.

Reflecting on that moment, Hochul recalled her college days at Syracuse University. “I remember the 1980 game vividly while I was working at a pizza shop; everyone stopped to watch together. I really hope the new generation of New Yorkers gets to enjoy a similar experience tomorrow. Go America!”

As for Canada, they face challenges with several injuries, including captain Sidney Crosby and defenseman Josh Morrissey. Still, coach John Cooper hasn’t ruled out their participation in the final. He mentioned, “I saw Crosby was skating today. I haven’t spoken with him yet, but we’ll meet tonight to decide what’s happening tomorrow.”

Additionally, the Olympic women’s hockey team recently won the gold medal by defeating Canada 2-1 in overtime.
