Debate Arises After Man with Tourette Syndrome Yells Racial Slur at Michael B. Jordan, Delroy Lindo During BAFTAs

Controversy at BAFTAs Over Tourette Syndrome Outburst

On Sunday, a significant controversy surfaced online when a man with Tourette syndrome shouted a racial slur during a presentation by actors Michael B. Jordan and Delroy Lindo at the BAFTAs.

John Davidson, a Scottish activist and prominent figure advocating for Tourette syndrome in the UK since the late 1980s, was present at the event. His experiences inspired the recent film, i swear, which earned five BAFTA nominations, including one for Best Actor for Robert Aramayo. Throughout the evening, Davidson could be heard making various outbursts, including phrases like “shut up” and “fuck you.” However, the situation intensified when he yelled the racial slur during the award presentation for Best Visual Effects for Avatar: Fire and Ash.

In addition to Davidson’s outburst, other disruptive comments were recorded during the ceremony, including someone yelling “shut up” during BAFTA chair Sarah Putt’s introductory speech and “fuck you” while the directors of Boon accepted the award for Best Children’s and Family Film. Amidst this chaos, Davidson’s shout notably stood out.

Host Alan Cumming took a moment to address the crowd, stating, “You may have noticed that there is strong language in the background. This may be part of how Tourette syndrome manifests for some people, as the film explores that experience. Thank you for your understanding and cooperation in creating a respectful space for everyone.”

Later, Cumming apologized to the audience, emphasizing that the tics associated with Tourette’s are involuntary. He expressed, “I apologize if I was offended tonight.”

The film i swear depicts Davidson’s life growing up with Tourette syndrome, highlighting the severe social challenges and violence he faced due to his involuntary outbursts.

This incident ignited a lively debate online, particularly around the nature of Davidson’s outburst—was it a reflex tied to his condition, or did it represent a deeper personal sentiment? Discussions quickly devolved, with accusations of racism and ableism sparking conflict, often lacking any nuanced understanding of the situation.
