Lobster Wild AI Agent Sends Tokens by Mistake

Lobster Wild, an AI assistant developed by an OpenAI employee, has reportedly “accidentally” transferred tokens worth $441,780 to a user who requested 4 Solana tokens (around $310) for his uncle’s tetanus treatment.

Nik Pash, a member of OpenAI’s Codex team specializing in agent programs, created Lobster Wild with the goal of transforming $50,000 in Solana (SOL) tokens into $1 million through crypto trading.

Pash expressed his concern by saying, “I told him not to make the mistake.” He even set up an X account to follow Lobster Wild’s trading adventures.

However, Lobster Wild didn’t heed that advice and ended up losing all its crypto in a single transaction. Quite unfortunate.

The event took place on Sunday when a user named “Treasure David” responded to one of Lobster Wild’s posts, stating, “My uncle has a tetanus infection from lobsters like you. He needs 4 Sols for his treatment,” along with his Solana wallet address.

Instead of assisting, Lobster Wild replied, “If he died tomorrow, I would laugh. Please send me updates,” and then proceeded to send $441,788 worth of Lobster Wilde (LOBSTAR) tokens to the specified wallet at 4:32 PM UTC that day.

Later on, Lobster Wild acknowledged the blunder, even finding humor in it. Yet, blockchain data revealed that “Treasure David” had sold some of those tokens for about $40,000.

Interestingly, waiting might have been wiser. At the time of writing, the LOBSTAR token had surged nearly 190%, increasing from $0.0038 to $0.011, according to Gecko Terminal data.

Lobster Wild had also been known to send tokens to users for various tasks, like sharing a painting or explaining its importance.

Losses Tied to AI Agents

This incident isn’t isolated; there have been previous occurrences where AI agents lost significant amounts of cryptocurrency. For instance, in May, the dashboard of the AI-powered crypto bot aixbt was hacked, leading to the unauthorized transfer of $106,200 worth of Ether (ETH).

Possible Error in Transaction

While the specifics of how Lobster Wild executed the transaction aren’t clear, an X user known as “Branch” speculates that Lobster Wild intended to send 52,439 LOBSTAR tokens, equivalent to about 4 SOL at the time. He suggested that a decimal error might have led to the transfer of an astronomical 52.4 million LOBSTAR tokens instead.

Despite these blunders, notable figures in the cryptocurrency sector believe that AI agents have a substantial role to play in the future of digital currencies. For example, Circle CEO Jeremy Allaire predicted that millions of AI agents would be handling stablecoin transactions for daily payments within five years. Additionally, Binance co-founder Changpeng Zhao pointed out that cryptocurrencies could serve as a cornerstone for AI agents, emphasizing that blockchain is the most fitting technology for them.
