California Governor’s Remarks Draw Controversy
In an intriguing move to connect with voters, California Governor Gavin Newsom has shown a rather unexpected side of himself during a recent book tour. His new memoir has taken him to key battleground states, including Georgia, causing many to speculate about a potential presidential run in 2028. However, his recent comments in Atlanta might have complicated those ambitions, as he made some awkward remarks while trying to relate to the audience.
Newsom, seemingly nervous, acknowledged, “I’m not trying to impress you. I just want to impress you. I’m just like you. I’m not better than you.” He also mentioned his SAT score, stating, “I’m a guy with a 960 SAT. I’m not trying to offend anyone, just trying to do my best.” Then he added, “You’ll never see me read a speech because I can’t read a speech.”
His comments caused a backlash from various political circles. Nicki Minaj, a prominent figure in the music industry, voiced her discontent on social media, stating his approach to communicating with Black voters came off as condescending. “His way of bonding with Black people is to tell them how stupid and illiterate he is,” she criticized, suggesting that her initial impression of him was accurate. She emphasized the oddity of Newsom’s delivery, noting how he slowed down his speech in an attempt to make his points more understandable.
“He literally slows down his words and speaks in a sporadic rhythm,” she remarked, adding that this behavior reinforced a belief that he thinks they lack intelligence. She argued that the way he talked to them was reminiscent of a teacher addressing children, indicating a serious disconnect.
