Democratic candidate for the Michigan House of Representatives, Shelby Campbell, recently shared in a TikTok video that her decision to run for Congress was, in part, motivated by spite toward her ex-girlfriend, with whom she broke up a decade ago.
In a video posted on February 6, she mentioned that the man blocked her on social media and ended their relationship on the same day ten years prior. Campbell highlighted the achievements she’s made since their split, even expressing gratitude toward her ex (whom she named) while citing his meanness as a driving factor for her congressional run. “Everything I do is out of malice,” she stated. “Instead of being an evil mean person, I’m just going to elevate others.”
“I still feel bad, but I’m grateful because I’ve accomplished so much without you,” she continued, speaking directly to her ex in the video. “At that time, I just wanted to help you with your struggles. Now, while I might be a hairstylist, I’m aiming for Congress.”
Campbell explained to the Daily Caller News Foundation that her video aims to illustrate how unresolved trauma and addiction can affect lives, and how embracing recovery can steer someone in a new direction.
“I share this story because it reflects a broader reality: when trauma is overlooked, it often leads to cycles of addiction and instability. However, confronting that trauma can lead to growth and purpose,” she wrote in an email. “My candidacy stems from my personal experiences and the belief that public policy should better support healing and opportunity for working people.”
She acknowledged that the end of her relationship was difficult, but it ultimately became a crucial turning point that pushed her toward independence and stability. “When I mention that everything I do is out of malice, it’s malice for good rather than for harm,” she explained, noting her determination not to be limited by her past.
In September, Campbell faced backlash after mocking the assassination of Charlie Kirk in a TikTok video, comparing it to the suspension of Jimmy Kimmel’s show. “Hey, Maga, how does it feel that Jimmy Kimmel is back while you can’t be the same?” she said, expressing what seemed like joy.
In response to the criticism, she characterized her remarks as dark humor, pointing out the irony in the situation regarding free speech. Additionally, Campbell’s campaign faced legal challenges from the company behind Campbell’s soup, which sued her for using campaign materials resembling their soup can design. They reached a settlement allowing her to continue her campaign, though she agreed to stop using the trademarked logo.
Campbell is currently competing in the Democratic primary for Michigan’s 13th Congressional District against incumbent Congressman Shri Thanedar and left-leaning candidate Donavan McKinney, who has endorsements from notable figures including Rashida Tlaib and Bernie Sanders.
