Snowball Attack on NYPD Officer Downplayed by Mayor
New York City Mayor Zoran Mamdani made headlines on Tuesday for his comments regarding a snowball attack on an NYPD officer that occurred on Monday in Washington Square Park. He described the incident as a mere “snowball fight,” despite the officer suffering facial injuries severe enough to require hospitalization.
An NYPD spokesperson indicated that multiple officers were struck by snowballs while responding to a disturbance involving a large group in the park. Following the event, NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch labeled the act as “disgraceful” and “criminal,” and confirmed that an investigation is underway.
When questioned about the situation during a press conference, Mayor Mamdani admitted to viewing footage of the events and remarked that it appeared to be just playful behavior among children. He further expressed doubt that any individuals should face charges for assaulting an officer.
As of now, no arrests have been reported regarding the snowball incidents. The New York City Police Benevolent Association condemned the occurrences as “unacceptable and outrageous,” emphasizing that those responsible should be held accountable. They noted that while the injured officers are receiving treatment, it is crucial to identify and charge the perpetrators for assaulting police officers.
The Detectives Endowment Association also expressed disapproval of the actions of those who threw snowballs at the officers. Its president, Scott Munro, described the event as a “deliberate, outrageous and dangerous attack” in a social media post, urging the mayor and the district attorney to take action against those involved.
Mamdani did not directly state that the backlash was excessive, but he did call for New Yorkers to show police officers the respect they deserve. He noted the importance of acknowledging the efforts of law enforcement during challenging snowstorms.
Calls from political figures, including Representative Nicole Malliotakis and former New York Governor Andrew Cuomo, have pushed the mayor to denounce the assault. Malliotakis characterized the attack as “shameful” and insisted that all city leaders should advocate for the NYPD and hold the culprits accountable. Cuomo similarly criticized the mayor’s previous language regarding the police, arguing that negative rhetoric has led to increased disrespect towards law enforcement.
As reactions continue to unfold, former NYPD Commissioner John Chell labeled the incident an “absolute disgrace,” while also expressing expectations for a strong condemnation from the mayor. He suggested that should such an act occur again, there would be serious legal consequences.
