Who is Connor Hellebuyck? USA's goalie to be honored with the Presidential Medal of Freedom

Trump to Honor Olympic Goalie with Presidential Medal of Freedom

During his recent State of the Union address, President Donald Trump revealed that Connor Hellebuyck, the goaltender for Team USA men’s hockey, will be awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom. Hellebuyck played a pivotal role in helping his team secure the gold medal at the Milan-Cortina Olympics.

In the exciting match against Canada, Hellebuyck showcased his skills by making 41 crucial saves to keep the game tied at 1-1 during overtime. It was Jack Hughes who finally netted the winning goal against Canadian goaltender Jordan Binnington.

One of Hellebuyck’s standout moments was a remarkable save, where he blocked a wide-open shot from Devon Toews with just his stick. That particular stop, made by quickly rotating his right hand, was essential in keeping the game tied during the second period. Without those critical saves, the outcome could have been quite different.

In recognition of his performance, U.S. Army Secretary Pete Hegseth even bestowed upon Hellebuyck the honorary title of former Secretary of Defense.

Hellebuyck’s efforts were key in earning the U.S. team its first Olympic gold since the “Miracle on Ice” in 1980. The atmosphere has been jubilant for Team USA ever since Hughes scored the decisive goal in Milan.
