Trump Celebrates Texas Flood Rescue Heroes in State of the Union

In a gripping moment during his State of the Union address, President Donald Trump recounted the dramatic rescue of 11-year-old Millie Kate McClymond from deadly floods in Texas back in July 2025. He also took the time to honor the Coast Guard heroes who played a pivotal role in her rescue.

“You might recall how the water nearly swept her away… Millie Kate closed her eyes and turned to God, believing she was at the end of her rope,” Trump shared with the nation. He spoke of the Coast Guard rescue swimmer, Scott Luskan, who descended from a helicopter just in time. “His arrival felt like an answered prayer.” The emotions in the air were palpable.

This tragic flooding incident, which occurred on Independence Day, took a heavy toll, claiming 135 lives, among them 27 campers and counselors at Camp Mystic in Hunt, Texas.

Scott Luskan, who hails from New Jersey, was recognized for his tremendous efforts, managing the rescue of 165 individuals as the sole triage coordinator on the scene. The bravery he exhibited was nothing short of remarkable.

During the address, President Trump reunited Millie Kate with Luskan, highlighting that this was Scott’s very first rescue mission. “He managed to save not just Millie Kate, but 164 others,” the President remarked. “It’s hard to believe just how much he accomplished that day.”

As the night progressed, the president recounted the chaos: “The wind was howling, the rain was relentless, and the rapids were terrifying—something no one had ever witnessed.” It was a moment of real celebration as Scott and Millie Kate came together for the first time since the events unfolded.

Later, Trump presented Luskan with the Legion of Merit, a military commendation celebrating extraordinary bravery during the rescue operation.

At just 26 years old during the rescue, Scott Luskan has been hailed as a hero, with Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem referring to him as “America’s hero.” The accolades continued to pour in, emphasizing his courageous actions that day.

“Scott Luskan saved an incredible 165 lives during that disaster, demonstrating the spirit and mission of the Coast Guard,” was noted on social media shortly after the rescue. It’s moments like these that remind us of the heroism that exists all around us.
