Lauren Chapin, ‘Father Knows Best’ Star, Passes Away at 80

Lauren Chapin, an actress renowned for her role as the youngest daughter on the 1950s sitcom “Father Knows Best,” has passed away at the age of 80.

Her son Matthew shared the news, stating, “After a long and hard-fought battle over the past five years, the time has come. My mom, Lauren Chapin, passed away tonight after a battle with cancer. I am completely speechless right now.”

Chapin was born on May 23, 1945, in Los Angeles and gained fame as a child actress, portraying Cathy “Kitten” Anderson on “My Father Knows.” The show enjoyed six successful seasons, airing from October 1954 to May 1960. Notably, she co-starred with Judy Garland in the 1954 film “A Star is Born.”

Throughout her career, Chapin appeared in various television films and stage productions, including the 1976 musical comedy “The Amorous Adventures of Don Quixote and Sancho Panza.” Later, she reprised her iconic role in the TV reunions “Father Knows Best: Christmas Home” and “Father Knows Best.”

Lauren had two older brothers, Billy, known for “The Night of the Hunter,” and Michael, who appeared in “It’s a Wonderful Life,” both of whom were also child actors.

In her later years, Chapin reflected on her troubled childhood marked by trauma. She shared that her mother struggled with alcoholism and that she faced sexual abuse from her father. By the time she was 11, she described herself as “manic-depressive” and mentioned having attempted suicide.

During a 1989 appearance on “Live! with Regis and Kathie Lee,” she expressed, “It was very difficult to understand how Kathy Anderson could be loved and protected, and Lauren Chapin lived a completely different kind of life. I couldn’t understand how God could make me suffer.”

Chapin’s life also included struggles with heroin addiction, several challenging marriages, and miscarriages. Yet, she found sobriety in the 1970s and later became a pastor and author.

She is survived by both a son and a daughter.
