Mayor and AOC Push for Early Education Enrollment
New York City Mayor Zoran Mamdani and Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez released a statement in Spanish, encouraging families to sign up their children for the city’s free 3K and pre-kindergarten programs before Friday’s deadline. They highlighted that eligibility is open “regardless of immigration status.”
A two-and-a-half-minute video, shared on Mamdani’s official account, features both politicians speaking entirely in Spanish, with the American and New York City flags behind them. After Mamdani commented on her “rusty” Spanish, they promoted free, full-day early education for kids who will turn three or four by 2026.
Ocasio-Cortez clearly stated in the video that “any parent living in New York City can enroll their child, no matter their occupation, income, or immigration status.” They emphasized that no Social Security number is required, and applications are available in over 200 languages. Parents have the options to apply online, by phone, or at the Family Welcome Center. The deadline for enrollment for the 2026-2027 school year is February 27.
This initiative aligns with New York City’s long-term commitment to universal early education. Critics have suggested that it highlights how taxpayer-funded benefits are being made accessible irrespective of legal status, especially during a time when the city is facing the financial challenges of a significant influx of immigrants.
The funding for this program comes from a blend of city, state, and federal sources. Previously, city officials have noted that this initiative saves families an average of $26,000 annually in child care costs.
