Fight breaks out at courthouse following Ohio sentencing in teen shooting case

Emotions flared in an Ohio courtroom on Tuesday when a judge sentenced a Cincinnati man for the shooting death of a teenager, culminating in a shouting match that turned into a brawl. The sentencing of Latrell Rogers, 20, stirred tension between the families of Rogers and 17-year-old Edwin “Meisel” Arrington.

Rogers had pleaded guilty to a lesser charge of manslaughter related to Arrington’s death and was sentenced to serve between 12 to 17 and a half years in prison, as reported by FOX 19. Video captured a family member of Rogers expressing their support by shouting “I love you” after the judge announced the verdict.

Arrington’s family, however, reacted strongly, yelling back, leading to arguments both inside and outside the courthouse. Judge Christopher McDowell noted that the noise level was so high that it disrupted court proceedings, resulting in multiple arrests for failure to comply with deputies’ orders.

Due to the chaos, McDowell had to cancel the rest of the morning’s hearings, stating that the courtroom could not continue in such an environment. Meanwhile, the Hamilton County Sheriff’s Office indicated that there were several people still wanted in connection with the case, although it wasn’t clear if any arrests had been made following the altercation.

The initial shooting had occurred early on January 1, 2024, in the University Heights neighborhood of Cincinnati. Officers apprehended Rogers on May 22, several months after they found Arrington dead from multiple gunshot wounds.

Before his plea deal, Rogers was facing more serious charges, including two counts of murder and two counts of felony assault.
