ICE detains 9 convicted sex offenders in California sanctuary cities

California’s Sanctuary Policy Faces Criticism

California’s approach to immigration is again coming under fire. This comes after Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) arrested nine convicted sex offenders in Los Angeles. There are allegations that state officials are releasing numerous criminal immigrants instead of acting on requests from federal authorities.

On Wednesday, ICE revealed that these nine individuals were taken into custody during a targeted operation aimed at apprehending dangerous offenders in the community. The agency stated that all arrested will face justice for their crimes and be removed from the United States to ensure public safety.

Since January 20, 2025, ICE mentioned that California has denied 4,561 immigration detainees linked to illegal immigration offenses. Among those released have been various offenders, including murderers and sex offenders, rather than transferring them into federal custody.

Currently, there are over 33,000 active detainees in California’s correctional facilities. ICE is urging local authorities to assist in removing these unsafe individuals from the U.S.

ICE Director Todd M. Lyons emphasized the urgency, stating, “ICE cannot afford to stand idly by while criminal illegal alien sex offenders roam Los Angeles and other areas. We are here to enforce the law to protect our families, friends, and neighbors.” The goal, he explained, is to enhance public safety by removing such offenders from the streets.

In the operation, local authorities released Juan Parra Gomez, 39, who had previously been sentenced to two years in prison for sexual offenses involving a child. Unfortunately, before ICE could request his custody, he was let go, but was later apprehended again. He’s also facing additional charges.

ICE also detained Lucas Rendon Hernandez, 37, who, after being convicted of arranging visits with a child, received a brief jail time of three days. Although authorities released him, they later faced pressure to arrest him again.

ICE arrested Jose Montero Peña, 73, who received 288 days in prison for inappropriate actions with a minor. Along with him was Amadeo Castellanos Urbano, 50, sentenced to 12 years for continuous sexual abuse and lewd acts involving a child.

Among other individuals caught up in this sweep were Andres Sanchez Ortiz, 53, sentenced to 16 years for sexual abuse, and Feliciano Olivares, 49, who faced 18 years for similar offenses involving a child. Additionally, Daniel Bran Rivas, 30, received nine years for rape, and Luis Alfonso Juarez, 60, was sentenced to 18 years for continuous sexual abuse involving a minor.
