California lawmaker spent $350K on campaign credit card

California state Representative Isaac Bryan has reportedly racked up an impressive $349,108 in credit card expenses, primarily for social media promotions on platforms like Instagram and Facebook, focused on Navy surveillance. This spending may be seen as a strategic move as he considers pursuing a higher political office.

According to a review of political advertising expenditures and election records, Bryan has allocated over $200,000 to attract attention on social media. It seems he’s capitalizing on campaign contributions from special interests, allowing him to outspend his own funds by about $130,000 compared to last year.

Many of the charges on Bryan’s Capital One account stem from paid posts featuring him in various states of undress while engaging in activities like strolling on the beach, playing basketball, or doing yoga—all while looking quite relaxed. Some people might say this approach is a bit much, yet it certainly draws viewers.

Interestingly, Bryan—who has previously advocated for defunding the police and abolishing ICE—tags some posts with hashtags related to self-healing, urging followers to engage with his content.

But it seems there’s more to Bryan’s online presence than merely increasing his Instagram followers, which currently stand at 167,000. His motives could align with aspirations for a higher office, possibly in Washington, D.C.

His district is currently represented by Maxine Waters, who, at 88, is seeking re-election. Bryan’s ambitions could put him in direct competition with her.

“For someone ambitious like Bryan, raising his profile is smart,” shared a Democratic consultant. “In Los Angeles, the competition is intense, so having a strong following is crucial.”

One political advisor expressed that as long as it’s appropriately funded, there’s nothing wrong with his approach—though they couldn’t help but acknowledge the rather flashy nature of it.

There are also whispers that Bryan could be personally benefiting from campaign contributions that elevate his public image. State law permits candidates to keep mileage credits and points on campaign-eligible credit cards. Given his spending nearly $350,000, there’s speculation that this might serve a dual purpose: boosting his campaign reach while padding his own wallet.

In just the last quarter of 2025, Bryan’s campaign expenditures exceeded $98,500, which included costs for a trip to Japan, many rideshare services, fine dining, and political donations.

Not everyone is on board with Bryan’s strategy. Criticism has emerged regarding his frequent social media activity and decision-making. YouTube personality Demetra Kay recently took him to task for not respecting reparations laws, labeling him as something akin to a “prostitute” in a video targeting Bryan.

“I’ve never met him personally, but he really strikes me as a charlatan. That feels true for a lot of politicians, but with him, it seems particularly disingenuous,” Kaye commented.

As of now, Bryan has not responded to inquiries for his side of the story, nor did his consultant, who abruptly ended the conversation. This leaves many wondering what Bryan’s true goals are with his ambitious online campaign.
