The FBI has reportedly terminated several employees based on the director’s decisions. In light of recent events, Kash Patel revealed that the agency obtained phone records from 2022 and 2023 involving him and White House Chief of Staff Susie Wiles during his time as a civilian.
Sources briefed on the situation indicated that the layoffs may extend beyond this round. CNN has mentioned that around ten of the newly dismissed FBI staff were involved in a lawsuit against President Donald Trump concerning government document storage at Mar-a-Lago.
Patel expressed his shock, stating, “It’s deeply disturbing that the previous FBI leadership used weak justifications to secretly obtain my phone records and those of Susie Wiles, all while trying to keep the process obscured from oversight.”
He went on to allege that operatives from the Biden administration, under then-Director Christopher Wray, not only acquired “toll records” related to Biden and Wiles’ private phones, a tactic similar to that used against Republican Congress members in Operation Arctic Frost, but also attempted to hide this information when seeking court approval.
The New York Times reported that some employees within the FBI were let go, mentioning that various support personnel, agents, and supervisors were involved in this effort.
Regarding the toll records, they can provide investigators with details like the caller’s identity, as well as the date, time, location, and duration of the call.
Reuters, referencing two FBI officials, noted that the agency sought multiple records in 2023, including calls between Wiles and his lawyer. Although Wiles’ lawyer was aware of the recording, it’s said that Wiles himself was not informed.
Wiles expressed his surprise over the situation, as reported by Axios. Sources familiar with the case shared with CBS News that Wiles’ records were examined in relation to the Trump document case, and noted that Patel’s records were not linked to Operation Arctic Frost. It appears this investigation relates to former Special Counsel Jack Smith’s federal lawsuit against Trump concerning the 2020 election.
Blaze News has attempted to contact the FBI for comments regarding these developments.
In discussions about the investigation, Trump officials indicated that additional supporters of Trump could also be under FBI scrutiny, suggesting that the recent disclosures might only reveal part of a larger issue.
The FBI Agents Association quickly condemned the dismissals of those involved, arguing that these actions would compromise the bureau by removing essential skills and destabilizing its workforce, while also undermining trust in its leadership and affecting recruitment efforts.
Anthony Cawley, a former communications director for Biden’s Justice Department, voiced concerns that Patel seems focused on finding reasons to prosecute Jack Smith.
