Steve Hilton stays in front in the race for California governor.

According to a new poll, Republican candidate Steve Hilton is leading a tight race for the California governorship.

The former Fox News commentator, who was born in Britain, garnered 14% support from likely voters, placing him ahead of Democrat Katie Porter, who received 13%, and Republican Riverside County Sheriff Chad Bianco at 12%, as reported by the Public Policy Institute of California.

Additionally, Democrat Eric Swalwell and billionaire Tom Steyer had support at 11% and 10%, respectively.

These results were released just a week after another survey showed Hilton with 17% support, leading both Swalwell and Bianco, who tied at 14%.

California operates a “top two” or “jungle primary” system, set for June, where all candidates appear on a single ballot regardless of party affiliation. Voters get to choose from this list without needing to align with any particular party.

The primary system means the top two candidates progress to the general election. This setup could potentially result in two candidates from the same party competing in November, which might limit representation from other parties.

It’s been almost 20 years since Republicans last voted for a California governor—Arnold Schwarzenegger clinched his second term back then.

Reflecting voter sentiments, the Public Policy Institute of California’s poll also indicated a major dissatisfaction regarding the state’s trajectory, with 52% of respondents believing California is heading in the wrong direction.

The rising cost of living and inflation emerged as key issues, with 61% expressing that a candidate’s views on affordability were “very important” to their voting decision.

Interestingly, 55% of those surveyed stated a preference for tax reductions even if it meant less access to state services.
